Some people should not be allowed anywhere near kids. This woman, Avantae Deven, is one of them. In 2011 and 2013, she adopted three boys and two girls from three different counties in North Carolina.
Only three out of the five survived her brand of motherhood. The abuse allegedly went on for years, but the secret didn’t come out until fall of 2023. These are the chilling allegations, according to the affidavit.
Avantae’s 15-year-old son, in the middle of a mental health crisis, calls 911 in November. When police talk to him, he says he hasn’t seen his brother Blake in years. And the last time he saw him, he had a broken arm, and now he’s dead.
At this point, social services gets involved. And if you’re up to no good, you definitely don’t want extra attention. So now, Avantae’s nervous.
